Weird Items That Have Been Found in Storage Containers

Storage containers can be used to store just about anything, from business stock to general clutter that’s taking up too much space in our homes. However, sometimes you find something just a little out of the ordinary.

Here at Store That, we’ve put together a list of our favourite weird items that have been discovered in abandoned storage units around the world.

Weapons

Now, it’s no secret that some people enjoy collecting memorabilia of more violent, war-oriented nature, but one person took this too far in a self-storage unit in Michigan. During an auction of one of the shipping containers, the buyer came across a live hand grenade. Luckily the police were called immediately, the bomb was safely disposed of, and no one got hurt!

Body Parts

We definitely wouldn’t recommend storing this next one in our E14 self-storage containers! This was another discovery during an auction and this time, a severed leg was uncovered. The leg had once belonged to a man named John Wood. In 2004 he lost it in a plane crash, and he kept it in hopes he would be buried with it when he died.

James Bond’s Submarine Car

This one brings a whole new meaning to Store That’s storage containers. In 1989, a man in Long Island purchased a unit for a mere $100. He got more than his money's worth when, to his surprise, he found the Lotus Submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me within. It was dented and was missing its tires, but it was restored to its former glory. The car was then passed round museums, before eventually being purchased for a whopping $1 million by Tesla founder, Elon Musk!

Grandma

Death-bed confessions don’t get weirder than this! Bobbie Bennett Hancock almost took the secret of what she placed in her storage containers to the grave. Due to rainstorms and vehicle problems, Bobbie had trouble burying her mother, 95-year-old Ann Bunch, when she died. Overwhelmed and upset at the thought of parting with her, she took the body to a storage unit in Tampa, Florida. She only revealed her confession to her children 17 years later when police uncovered a bag of decaying bones.
