Secure Storage Containers in Popular Culture
We’ve all heard of Storage Wars. If you haven’t, what rock have you been living under? This dose of secure storage containers has been injected into popular culture since 2010. It is, however, not the only example of storage units within the mainstream world. There are many other examples that, here at Store That, we’re rather fond of – we thought we’d take you through them.
Storage Wars
In case you’re not familiar with the American reality TV show, it started in 2010 and follows people that bid on storage units where the rent has not been paid. It’s fascinating to watch as bidders pay high amounts of money without actually knowing what the secure storage containers hold behind their doors. On the opposite scale, they can also pay very little for a unit full of treasures. This incredibly popular series has spiralled into multiple spinoffs and is still airing to this day!
Santa Clarita Diet
In 2017, Netflix introduced us to the Hammond family in the horror-comedy, Santa Clarita Diet. Shelia Hammond was thrown into an un-known world when she accidentally ate something that turned her into a living Zombie. Craving human flesh, her and her family quickly have to get creative to find way to curb her hunger – one of these involves secure storage containers. Shelia and her husband Joel lure unsuspecting people to storage units covered in tarpaulin, kill them and then store them in a freezer (although we wouldn’t recommend doing this in one of ours!).
Only Fools and Horses
One for those comedy fans out there – the appearance of secure storage containers in Only Fools and Horses. The infamous duo, Del Boy and Rodney, discover an antique pocket watch within an old storage unit. In an unlikely twist, they sell the watch and get millions! This does end up disappearing, just as quickly as they got it. Just goes to show, you never know what people keep inside their storage units!
Breaking Bad
Another TV show that has made use of storage units is Breaking Bad. The ABC show sees character Skylar open one of the secure storage containers to uncover heaps and heaps of cash. This cash is the result of Walter delving into a life of drugs and crime in order to provide for his family when he learns he has lung cancer. Although this made Walter very rich, we do not condone the use of our storage units for money laundering!
