Is there a case for morals, loyalty and caring in business these days?

Over the Christmas period, I had some time to sit, relax and contemplate my life, in both a personal and business capacity, to come to the conclusion of “how lucky am I ”  and I’m not talking in a material sense but my upbringing; it’s the parental guidance and the people in my life that I am talking about, including friends from primary school. My mother; thoughtful, kind, nurturing and wonderful. My father, strong, loving and hard-working, building a business from nothing.
These values have fortunately led to a material success through an ethic of hard work which was drummed into me and remain ingrained as I near my 50 years in the business.

Our company was founded by my father cca 1949 and I joined the business in 1978.
A year later I met the women I fell in love with and married (still to this date). My father was a man of his word, respected and trading around the world, travelling half the year and forging business relationships with many who became lifetime friends.
I carry on the business in a similar vein and value our reputation in the industry for being loyal, caring, dependable and reliable with a high level of integrity. In the early days, it was all done by a handshake; now it’s legally binding contracts.

In today’s fast-moving business world, success is often measured by numbers—revenue, growth, and market share. Yet behind every sustainable business lies something less visible but far more powerful: loyalty, strong morals, and genuine care for people. It’s a trait that is most important to me but I have seen disappearing over the years as the independents, in all walks of life, are swallowed up by financial institutions or conglomerates.

I like the give-and take approach where everyone in the equation is happy and long-term relations are forged but more and more, I see the quick buck approach with one party only looking for the win (not the win-win).

Today’s world of trading is often about price but as I tell my own family, look for reputation and reliability first, then consider price and you won’t be disappointed. Storing goods for others, started here around 12 years ago but the principals of our business and the way we treat staff and customers has not changed. Ask our longest serving employee who has been working here for 63 years, since leaving school at the age of 16 and is still as sharp as a razor!

When you are looking for self-storage in east London, E14 or around Canary Wharf, think about the above. It’s not only our variety of self-storage units that will impress you, it’s the way we speak to you on or off-site. You would think all the above comes at a premium price but it’s not the case; we are super-competitive.
